Field Marks: 4.75 in. A locally uncommon warbler of open second growth, woodland edges, and brushy pastures; declining in some areas, apparantly due to competition with Blue-winged Warbler. Actively forages high and low in trees; sings persistently at height of breeding season. Adult males have yellow crown, gray upperparts, and yellow wing patches; underparts white, with black throat and ear patch; white spots in tail. Females and immatures have gray throat and ear patch. Song typically a buzzy, insectlike "beee bz bz bz";sometimes sings song of Blue-Winged Warbler.
  16. Range: Breeds from central Minnesota through Great Lakes region to s. New England, south in Appalachians to n. Georgia. Winters in tropics.
